Ernest Hemingway introduced the “Two-Hearted” name to the world in “The Big Two-Hearted River”, a short story about his post-World 1 trout fishing experience in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The subject property is a 47.5-acre tract that encompasses 3,000 feet of the Little Two-Hearted River. The river enters the southwest corner of the property, then crisscrosses it and works its way north to the Lake Superior shoreline. It then parallels the lakeshore flowing east approximately 1,400 feet toward entry into the Big Lake. The little Two-Hearted River is a Michigan Department of Natural resources (DNR) designated “Type 1” Trout stream. A Type 1 stream is described in the DNR's “Michigan Trout Trails” publication as: “an inland stream with a significant population of trout that has sufficient natural reproduction to sustain wild trout populations. Type 1 streams are Considered high quality trout waters and are protected from certain activities” The property lies adjacent to a Michigan State Forest property on its east and south sides. A two-track drive enters the property from the State Forest border then proceeds north and west where it joins the Lake Superior beach front. At its southeast corner, the property abuts Luce County Road 412, and along its southwest border touches the North Country National Scenic Hiking Trail. The property lies in close proximity to several upper Peninsula scenic, camping, and recreation sites: Tahquamenon Falls State Park, 20 miles south, the Two Hearted River State Forest Campground, two miles west, Culhane Lake State camping site, 2 miles south, Paradise, 20 miles southeast and the Crisp Point Lighthouse Historical Site 9 miles east. One-half mile east along the Lake Superior shore is the DNR Little Lake Harbor of Refuge with pier and channel entry access to a DNR mooring dock and boat launch ramp on the lake's east side.
